Alt-Ottakring

Was noch lebt, ist Traum.
Ach, wie war es schön!
Jüngre werden kaum
jene Zeit verstehn,
wo das Kirchlein stand
und die Häuser blank
unterm Giebelrand
hatten Weingerank.

Und im Herbste gar,
wenn der Maische Duft
hing im blauen Klar
der beschwingten Luft!
Von den Hügeln schlicht
kam der Hauer Sang,
da die Stadt noch nicht
grau ins Grüne drang.

Heut ein Steinbezirk
wie ein andrer auch,
und nur sanft Gebirg
schickt wie einst den Hauch,
Hauch von Obst und Wein
in die Gassen aus,
und der Sonnenschein
liegt auf altem Haus.

Da und dort ein Tor
hat noch breiten Schwung,
Buschen grün davor
lädt wie einst zum Trunk,
und im Abend wird
längst Vergangnes nah,
spielt ein Bursch gerührt
Ziehharmonika.

Old-Ottakring¹

Only dreams live now.
But how lovely, then!
Youth can not see how
lures of old remain,
where the abbey stood
and the houses fine
under gable wood
carried up the vine.

Autumn thoughts arise:
How the smell of must
hung in azure skies
like a golden dust.
Sounding from the hill
vineyard's simple song
where the city still
not released its throng.

Now a stony place
like all cities are,
just the hill's embrace
sends its scents from far:
Scents of fruits and wines
waft through alley grooves,
and the sun still shines
onto shingled roofs.
Here and there a door
still stands curved and wide²,
where the green before³
calls the guests inside;
and at evening's best
past becomes re-known,
when a lad, impressed,
plays accordion.

1. Ottakring is an outer district of Vienna, Austria. Like several of Vienna's outer districts, it used to be an independent, wine-growing hamlet, (which the Viennese burghers loved to visit for walking and sampling the new wine in the countryside).
2. Wide, curved doors are typical for vineyard houses.
3. Vineyard houses hang a bush of green conifer boughs on the door, to let the public know they are offering new wine (a wine called Heuriger, 'this year's').
